Abstract

The paper deals with the soil of fossil dunes in Finland. The data collected comes from eight dunes located in the northern and five, in the southern parts of the country. The information obtained from the study was compared with data concerning the brown earth of a Polish sandur. On eleven occasions the soil of the dunes was podzolic. In two of the Southern.Finnisn dunes brown podzol was in question. The soil profiles show no clear regional differences. The mineralogical composition and texture of the dune material were almost similar both in the southern and northern parts of the country. For other factors influencing soil formation, however, regional differences could be indicated. Generally speaking the study showed that the soil type of Finnish fossil dunes depends above all on the mineralogical composition and the texture of the dune material.
