The application of areal demographic development types to population projections - a case study on Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland

Abstract

Dynamic changes in the populations of small areal units may be rapid and unexpected, so that their nature is difficult to describe, e.g. by models. This means, in practice, that the mastery and application of general population projection methods in this case is exceptionally difficult. Regional planning, however, needs very detailed spatial information. One application or solution of a practical problem in this field based on the use of areal demographic development types is presented in this study.
