Abstract

The author reviews some present‑day characteristics of geography and gives some suggestions. The landscape should be understood as a mosaic and very detailed measurements are recommended to solve the special spatial features. On regional geography should be given more attention. The poor geographical knowledge of people is an astonishing and also dangerous issue. The teaching of geography in schools should be developed. The diffusion process of geography may lead to the risk that geography, as a single discipline, will disappear. Maps, aerial photographs and satellite data give a strong base for studies of environmental change and should be used by geographers. Cartographic skills have to be developed. Borderless geography offers a new challenge for geographers. Some critical comments are given of the global change studies based on prediction and models without strong data base.
